In a partnership with Planetly, Zühlke Germany has analysed its carbon emissions for 2019 and offset them through certified climate action projects. In a next step, Zühlke will develop long-term reduction measures based on the analysis results that will reduce the carbon footprint of Zühlke Germany moving forward.

Zühlke was founded in Switzerland in 1968 and serves customers from a variety of industries worldwide. Based on latest technologies, Zühlke creates and transforms services and products – from the initial vision to development, production, delivery and operation.
In its new business unit – Sustainability Engineering – Zühlke Germany has developed its own methodology for improving the sustainability of consumer products. The company uses its systematic approach to reduce manufacturing costs and to improve products also with regard to their sustainability. Zühlke believes that today, the focus should no longer solely be on reducing the financial but also the ecological footprint of products.
Zühlke Germany therefore wants to optimise the carbon footprint for its own business operations and has found an equally innovative partner for this project in Planetly.

Zühlke’s carbon footprint comprises the sum of greenhouse gases that are released into the atmosphere by all aspects of the company’s operations. A large proportion of these emissions comes from external services the company uses, employee commute and business travel as well as Zühlke’s office operations.
The company’s carbon footprint takes into account not only direct and energy-related emissions (scope 1 and scope 2) but also the emissions generated in the value chain by service providers and purchased products and services (scope 3).

Zühlke Germany’s carbon footprint for 2019 is 1,889 t CO2e. The largest share of the footprint was caused by business travel and employee commuting, followed by office equipment and operations. External services used by the company account for the third largest part of the footprint. Zühlke has rounded up their calculated carbon footprint to 2,080 t CO2e for the carbon offset.
In addition to carbon offset through certified climate action projects, Zühlke Germany is developing an action plan to sustainably reduce emissions in 2021 and beyond and, where possible, avoid them altogether.
The focus will be on a more sustainable energy supply for the office buildings (e.g. by switching to green electricity) as well as more sustainable concepts with regard to business travel and employee commute.
Zühlke Germany has decided to offset all carbon emissions from 2019 through certified climate action projects.
Zühlke’s first project supports low-income households in the Sichuan Province in China with biogas plants and cooking stoves.
The second project improves access to clean drinking water by building and maintaining wells in Rwanda. The project not only contributes to improving local hygiene and health conditions, but also reduces dependence on firewood and ensures greater equality between women and men.
In Indonesia, Zühlke supports the REDD+ Borneo rainforest project. This project saves 64,500 hectares of peat swamp forests with high biodiversity from being converted into palm oil plantations.
The fourth project aims to reduce carbon emissions in Bulgaria while supporting the development of biomass projects and improving financial parameters and competitiveness in the global pulp market.
In addition to these projects, Zühlke decided to also support a local reforestation project in Brandenburg. The aim of this project is to establish a climate-adapted mixed forest. Zühlke will support this project in 2020 by planting 100 trees.
